Monte Cristo Strata Recipe
Ingredients:
2 Tbsps of butter (1/4 of a stick)
12 ozs of mushrooms (fresh); sliced
10 ozs of ham; sliced to 1/2″ pcs
18 – 20 pcs of slice white bread for sandwiches; crusts taken out
10 eggs (large)
3 c of packed cheese (Gruyere, 12 ozs); grated
3.5 c of whole milk
2 Tbsps of thyme (fresh); chopped, or
2 tsp of thyme (dried)
2 tsps of mustard (dry)
1/2 tsp of pepper
3/4 tsp of salt
Instructions:
Melt the butter into medium-sized skillet on medium heat. Then, add in mushrooms then saute ’til golden approximately 10 mins. Season w/ pepper and salt. Grease a baking glass pan (13 by 9 by 2″) with butter generously.
Arrange 1/2 of the bread slices on base of pan; cut if necessary so it will fit. Then, top w/ ham, two cups cheese, then w/ mushrooms. Arrage the rest of the bread into one layer over the top.
Whisk the eggs, a Tbsp of thyme, mustard, pepper, salt then milk in a mixing bowl; pour onto bread. Chill w/ cover overnight.
Afterwards, take out from the refrigerator then let it sit about half an hour while the oven is being preheated (350 deg F).
Remove the cover then bake for an hour, ’til golden and puffed. Mix the rest of the cheese w/ a Tbsp of thyme and sprinkle over the top.
To finish, bake for 3 mins or ’til cheese will melt; let it sit 10 mins before it is served. Makes 8 – 10 servings.
